About
Chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by an autoimmune disorder; can lead to a goiter and/or hypothyroidism.
Assess
Pain, tenderness in neck, fever, lethargy, and difficulty with swallowing; thyroid hormone levels low, TSH increased.
Fatigue related to thyroid hormone imbalance
Complications
Thyroidectomy; hypothyroidism
Diagnosis
- Knowledge deficit related to disease process and management
- Knowledge deficit related to disease process and management
- Risk for electrolyte imbalance
Goals
- The client will demonstrate understanding of medication therapy and treatment.
- The client will report symptoms indicating worsening of condition.
Interventions
- Assess for fever, chills, goiter, previous viral or bacterial infection.
- Monitor VS, TSH and thyroid hormone levels.
- Teach client about medication therapy, disease process, s/s of complications.
- Administer medications as ordered.
- Prepare for thyroidectomy as indicated.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
