182-Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

About
Chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland caused by an autoimmune disorder; can lead to a goiter and/or hypothyroidism.
Assess
Pain, tenderness in neck, fever, lethargy, and difficulty with swallowing; thyroid hormone levels low, TSH increased.
Fatigue related to thyroid hormone imbalance
Complications
Thyroidectomy; hypothyroidism
Diagnosis
  • Knowledge deficit related to disease process and management
  • Knowledge deficit related to disease process and management
  • Risk for electrolyte imbalance
Goals
  • The client will demonstrate understanding of medication therapy and treatment.
  • The client will report symptoms indicating worsening of condition.
Interventions
  • Assess for fever, chills, goiter, previous viral or bacterial infection.
  • Monitor VS, TSH and thyroid hormone levels.
  • Teach client about medication therapy, disease process, s/s of complications.
  • Administer medications as ordered.
  • Prepare for thyroidectomy as indicated.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
