About
Serum magnesium level below 1.3 mEq/L ( may have different parameters for each clinical agency).
Assess
Electrolytes, neurological checks, deep tendon reflexes, bowel sounds, respiratory effort
Complications
Seizures, confusion, tetany, hypocalcemia, paralytic ileus
Diagnosis
Risk for injury related to electrolyte imbalance
Goals
- The client will have a return of magnesium levels above 1.3 mEq/ L ( may have different parameters for each clinical agency).
- The client will remain free from injury.
Interventions
- Monitor calcium levels, magnesium levels, neurological checks and bowel sounds frequently.
- Monitor neurological status every 2 hours.
- Initiate seizure precautions.
- Administer magnesium and calcium as ordered.
- Monitor deep tendon reflexes frequently during therapy.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
