271-HIV

About
Human immunodeficiency virus, an infectious virus spread by exposure to infected blood and body fluids, causing weakened immune system response.
Assess
Flu-like symptoms, fever, muscle aches, headaches, swollen lymph nodes. Assess for high risk criteria ( unprotected sex with multiple partners, anal sex, sex with same sex individuals, iv drug use, recent exposure to HIV infected individual via blood, history of STD's, blood transfusion prior to 1985). Assess CD4 counts and Viral Load, assess for opportunistic infections.
Complications
Opportunistic infections; increased viremia; decreased CD4 and CD8 counts; AIDS
Depression, ineffective coping- refer to support services in area, encourage client to notify health care physician if changes or difficulty managing symptoms.
Diagnosis
Risk for infection related to compromised immune system
Knowledge deficit related to medication regimen, prevention of disease transmission
Goals
  • The client will remain free from infections.
  • The client will maintain acceptable levels of CD4 and CD8 counts and viral load will remain low.
  • The client will state components of medication regimen.
Interventions
  • Maintain strict universal precautions; teach client how to prevent spread of infection to others.
  • Encourage client to verbalize fears and concerns; refer to support services in area to help maintain effective coping strategies.
  • Teach client about medication regimen and strict adherence to prescribed therapy.
  • Teach client about disease process, possible complications of disease process, and signs and symptoms to report to health care provider.
  • Teach client to avoid persons with infections and to initiate prompt treatment of any infections.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
