About
Inflammation of joints and/or body tissue as a result of excessive uric acid crystals being deposited in those areas.
Assess
Excess uric acid levels, swollen, painful joints, usually in the hands or feet. Assess for history of kidney stones, elevated BUN and creatinine; excessive intake of purines- alcohol, wine, cheeses, organ meats, sardines, seafood, etc).

Impaired physical mobility related to musculoskeletal and joint inflammation and pain
Chronic pain related to inflammation of joint
Goals
- The client will identify foods to avoid to prevent reoccurrence of gout episodes.
- The client will state rationale for medication therapy and proper regimen to follow for medication treatment.
Interventions
- Teach client about the medications he/ she is receiving and potential side-effects.
- Teach client about foods known to increase the incidence of gout episodes- including cheeses, wine, alcohol, sardines, organ meat, etc.
- Encourage client to notify physician if treatments are not working or if an increase in acute episodes of pain.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
