About
An acid-base disturbance characterized by high arterial pH and high HCO3.
Assess
Muscle weakness, decreased respiratory effort; muscle cramps and twitching; painful numbness and tingling, seizures, anxiety, irritability, hypocalcemia, hypokalemia
Complications
Seizures, electrolyte imbalances, respiratory muscle weakness, death
Diagnosis
- Risk for injury related to increased risk of seizure activity
- Acute confusion related to acid base disturbance and electrolyte imbalances
- Acute pain related to muscle cramping and/ or tetany
- Risk for decreased cardiac output related to dysrhythmias
Goals
- The client will have a return of ABG's to normal or compensated levels.
- The client will remain free from injury.
Interventions
- Monitor vital signs, pulse oximetry, electrolytes, ABG's frequently
- Institute seizure precautions.
- Assess muscle strength, including those of the respiratory system, to ensure adequate respirations.
- Assess neurological status frequently.
- Administer IV fluids, electrolytes, and other agents as ordered.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
