304-BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy)

About
Enlarged prostate gland, usually resulting in a narrow urethra inhibiting urine outflow.
Assess
Urinary frequency, nocturia, sensation of incomplete emptying, hematuria, post-void dribbling, bladder distention
Complications
UTI; surgery; incontinence; kidney failure
Diagnosis
Urinary retention related to bladder outlet obstruction secondary to BPH
Risk for infection related to residual urine
Goals
  • The client will have normal urinary output with no residuals.
  • The client will remain free from infections.
Interventions
  • Monitor urine output and residuals.
  • Administer medications, as ordered, to promote shrinking of the prostate and opening of the urethra ( ex. Proscar, flomax).
  • Encourage client to void as soon as feel the urge.
  • Teach client s/s of urinary retention or urinary tract infection that may need follow-up.
  • Teach client to limit or eliminate caffeine, diuretics, alcohol, or large amounts of fluid in a short time frame.
  • Prepare client for surgery, as indicated.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
