235-Bacterial Meningitis

About
Inflammation of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid and spine caused by remains of a previous or current bacterial infection, including Strep, or from being in close contact or quarters with someone else who has bacterial meningitis, can be fatal and requires immediate medical intervention and antibiotics.
Assess
Fever, photophobia, headache, muscle aches, nausea, stiff neck, recent upper respiratory illness, seizures, visual disturbances, altered mental status
Complications
Increased intracranial pressure; septic emboli; disseminated Intravascular coagulation ( DIC); death
Diagnosis
  • Pain related to infectious process and inflammation
  • Risk for falls related to infectious process
  • Excess fluid volume related to increased intracranial pressure
Goals
  • The client will be free from complications.
  • The client will verbalize understanding of treatment plan.
Interventions
  • Monitor vital signs, neurological status, and circulation to extremities.
  • Initiate seizure precautions.
  • Keep in a quiet, darkened room to manage for photophobia.
  • Administer medications ( antibiotics, analgesics, etc.) as ordered.
  • Maintain contact and droplet precautions as indicated by agency protocol.
  • Maintain head of bed up 30 degrees and monitor for s/s of increased intracranial pressure.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
