About
Inflammation and/or infection of the middle ear.
Assess
Ear pain, hearing acuity, Rinne test, Weber test, history of ear infections
Complications
Ear drum perforation, hearing loss, sinus infection, meningitis
Diagnosis
- Acute pain related to inflammation and infection.
- Knowledge deficit related to treatment.
- Sensory deficit related to auditory impairment.
Goals
- The client will state a pain level less than 4 after medication intervention.
- the client will have decreased inflammation in ear canal.
- The client will identify treatment and associated regimen.
- The client will have improved hearing via a whisper test.
Interventions
- Assess the external ear visually for redness, pain, swelling.
- Examine inner ear canal and tympanic membrane with otoscope.
- Administer analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and/ or antibiotics as prescribed.
- Teach client medication regimen, side effects, and adverse reactions to notify health care provider of.
- Encourage client to return to health care provider if symptoms do not improve or worsen.
- Prepare for surgical intervention if repeated ear infections over a short period of time.
- Reassess hearing after course of antibiotics.
