240-Conjunctivitis

About
Inflammation and infection of the eye usually present following an upper respiratory infection. Very contagious.
Assess
Redness, drainage, irritation, burning, itching of the eye; recent upper respiratory infection.
Complications
Re-infection, spread of infection
Diagnosis
  • Acute pain related to eye irritation.
  • Risk for infection related to spread of microorganisms.
Goals
  • The client will be free from discomfort.
  • The client will identify how to prevent spread of infection.
  • The client's infection will improve and later be eliminated.
Interventions
  • Assess and monitor the eye for increased redness drainage.
  • Administer antibiotic eye drops using appropriate technique.
  • Teach the client how to administer eye drops ( 5 minutes in between medicines, apply to center of conjunctival sac, gently close eyes, press on lacrimal duct for 1-2 minutes).
  • Encourage client to use a warm, moist wash cloth to clean eyes. Do not scrub. Allow warmth and water to break down any dry secretions. Wipe from inner canthus to outer canthus. Use aseptic technique.
  • Teach client to wash hands frequently, avoid touching the eye to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Teach client to dispose of contact lenses and to not wear contact lenses while eyes still have drainage and redness.
