244-Facial Paralysis

About
Also called "Bells Palsy", cranial nerve VII is effected causing facial paralysis on one side of the face.
Assess
Pain behind the ear or on face, paralysis of one side of the face, sagging on affected side, inability to control mouth, eye, or cheek movement
Complications
Corneal abrasion or injury; aspiration; social isolation; body image disturbance
Permanent facial paralysis
Diagnosis
  • Body image disturbance related to changes in facial appearance
  • Risk for impaired swallowing related to impaired facial movement
Goals
  • The client will identify techniques to move facial muscles.
  • The client will describe proper eye care.
  • The client will be free from injury.
Interventions
  • Monitor neuro status, pain levels, aspiration risks.
  • Administer medications ( antivirals, neuroleptics, mild analgesics, etc.) as indicated.
  • Teach client eye care including applying artificial tears, night time patching, and manually closing eye several times a day.
  • Teach client proper chewing strategies, dietary considerations; and using the unaffected side to sip and chew.
  • Teach the client about medication therapy, rationale for use, side effects, and adverse reactions.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
