Facial pain and spasms unilaterally caused by a disease of the fifth cranial nerve.
Assess
Facial pain, provoking factors, unilateral, onset, duration of symptoms.
Complications
Chronic pain; depression; surgical intervention; exacerbations
Diagnosis
Acute pain related to nerve damage causing facial pain
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in pain.
- The client will identify medication rationale, side effects, and regimen.
Interventions
- Monitor pain levels and characteristics of client.
- Administer medications ( antiepileptic, muscle relaxers, etc.) as indicated.
- Teach client about drug therapy including rationale, side effects, and adverse reactions.
- Encourage client to discuss fears, concerns, and feelings related to disease process.
- Prepare for surgical intervention as indicated.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
