261-Trigeminal Neuralgia

About
Facial pain and spasms unilaterally caused by a disease of the fifth cranial nerve.
Assess
Facial pain, provoking factors, unilateral, onset, duration of symptoms.
Complications
Chronic pain; depression; surgical intervention; exacerbations
Diagnosis
Acute pain related to nerve damage causing facial pain
Goals
  • The client will state a decrease in pain.
  • The client will identify medication rationale, side effects, and regimen.
Interventions
  • Monitor pain levels and characteristics of client.
  • Administer medications ( antiepileptic, muscle relaxers, etc.) as indicated.
  • Teach client about drug therapy including rationale, side effects, and adverse reactions.
  • Encourage client to discuss fears, concerns, and feelings related to disease process.
  • Prepare for surgical intervention as indicated.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
