About
Decreased cartilage and/or mobility in one or more joints, typically weight bearing joints such as knees and hips.
Assess
Assess for pain and stiffness of weight-bearing joints ( knees, hips); Assess for inflammation, response to NSAIDS; Obesity; Enlarged joints, grating sound of joints, Usually unilateral although can be bilateral.

Diagnosis
- Acute pain related to movement of effected joint
- Activity intolerance related to pain and inflammation of effected joint
Goals
- The client will remain free from injury.
- The client will be able to state rationales and potential side effects of medication therapy.
- The client will maintain physical mobility.
Interventions
- Administer NSAIDS, analgesics, etc. as ordered.
- Teach client about dietary changes to help lose weight if obesity is a contributing factor.
- Teach client range of motion exercises to maintain joint mobility.
- Teach client to use assistive devices, as ordered.
- Encourage client to use alternative methods to relieve pain, including relaxation techniques, positioning, use of heat, etc.
- Prepare for surgery, if indicated. See Total Joint Replacement.
- Teach client about medications, including NSAIDS and/ or analgesics, to help manage pain.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
