About
A chronic disease, effecting women more often than men, characterized by weakness and fatigue of skeletal and respiratory muscles, and muscles controlled by the cranial nerves.
Assess
Weakness improving with rest, visual disturbances, drooping eyelid, fatigue, myalgias, tingling, numbness.
Complications
Mechanical ventilation
Impaired mobility; ineffective coping; exacerbations
Diagnosis
- Ineffective airway clearance related to muscle weakness
- Self care deficit related to muscle weakness and fatigue
- Impaired mobility related to fatigue and muscle weakness
Goals
- The client will maintain a patent airway and effective respirations.
- The client will state measures to improve mobility.
- The client will identify adaptive techniques to accommodate for impaired mobility.
- The client will verbalize understanding of disease and treatment modalities.
Interventions
- Monitor respiratory status, vital signs, pulse oximetry frequently.
- Have endotracheal equipment at the bedside in case of respiratory emergency.
- Encourage coughing and deep breathing techniques.
- If shunt present for plasmapharesis, monitor for bruit, patency, bruising, or bleeding.
- Assist patient with ambulation, repositioning every two hours, range of motion exercises.
- Apply antiembolism compression stocking on client and monitor for changes in circulation.
- Encourage active participation in activities of daily living, use of assistive devices.
- Administer medications ( cholinesterase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, etc.) as ordered.
- Teach client and family member about the disease and drug therapy.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
