About
A viral infection caused by dormant viral cells from previously acquired chicken pox, usually in immunocompromised individuals.
Assess
Minor skin irritation, itching, pain, vesicles; fever, fatigue, aches.
Complications
Bell's palsy; eye infection, scarring
Diagnosis
- Risk for infection related to tissue destruction
- Acute pain related to skin lesions and nerve impingement
Goals
- The client will be free from infection.
- The client will state a decrease in pain.
Interventions
- Prevent transmission of infection.
- Maintain contact precautions and client isolation until lesions have crusted over.
- Make sure visitors and staff who have not previously had chicken pox abstain from entering clients room.
- Monitor pain levels and encourage client to indicate if pain increases.
- Administer pain medications, as indicated.
- Avoid transmission of virus to other areas of the body.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
