291-Herpes Zoster (Shingles)

About
A viral infection caused by dormant viral cells from previously acquired chicken pox, usually in immunocompromised individuals.
Assess
Minor skin irritation, itching, pain, vesicles; fever, fatigue, aches.
Complications
Bell's palsy; eye infection, scarring
Diagnosis
  • Risk for infection related to tissue destruction
  • Acute pain related to skin lesions and nerve impingement
Goals
  • The client will be free from infection.
  • The client will state a decrease in pain.
Interventions
  • Prevent transmission of infection.
  • Maintain contact precautions and client isolation until lesions have crusted over.
  • Make sure visitors and staff who have not previously had chicken pox abstain from entering clients room.
  • Monitor pain levels and encourage client to indicate if pain increases.
  • Administer pain medications, as indicated.
  • Avoid transmission of virus to other areas of the body.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
