About
Systemic infectious disease caused by a bite from an infected tick.
Assess
History of tick bite or insect bites, recent travel to heavily wooded area where ticks are present; fever, fatigue, muscle and joint aches; arthritis, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, arrhythmias; sometimes may have facial paralysis
Complications
Permanent damage to the joints and nervous system- early diagnosis and treatment
Meningitis, encephalitis
Diagnosis
Acute pain related to infectious disease
Knowledge deficit related to disease progression and injury prevention
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in pain.
- The client will demonstrate understanding of medication therapy and treatment.
Interventions
- Monitor the client for changes in assessment findings, including numbness, arthralgias, arrhythmias, shortness of breath, etc.
- Assess clients pain level and medicate using prn medications as ordered.
- Administer antibiotics as ordered.
- For clients in high risk areas, teach preventive measures including wearing protective clothing, removing tick with tweezers from skin, monitoring for flu-like symptoms and circular rash.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
