About
Throbbing, unilateral head pain lasting for several hours every day for up to several weeks.
Assess
Flushing or pale face, excruciating pain, several minutes of pain several times a day for a period of weeks, increased pressure around the eye, radiating pain, eye edema, eyelid droop, runny nose, tearing in one eye
Complications
Medication related adverse reactions; interference with ADL's
Diagnosis
Acute pain related to cerebral vascular changes secondary to cluster headache
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in pain.
- The client will be able to identify contributing factors and treatment strategies to manage a future occurrence.
Interventions
- Assess onset, length, duration, and types of symptoms.
- Administer medications as ordered.
- Monitor for side effects from medication therapy.
- Teach client techniques to utilize when symptoms begin.
- Teach client ways to prevent an acute attack ( avoiding triggers; beta blockers; dietary changes)
- Teach client side effects and adverse reactions of medication therapy.
- Encourage client to follow up with health care provider if increase in severity and frequency and decrease in medication effectiveness.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
