218-Hypocalcemia

About
Decrease in calcium, below normal levels.
Assess
Low serum calcium levels, positive Chvostek's and Trousseau's sign; muscle twitches, cramps, tetany, confusion, irritable, anxious, seizures.
Complications
Seizures, fractures, death
Diagnosis
  • Risk for injury related to bone density loss
  • Decreased cardiac output related to possible dysrhythmias associated with calcium loss
  • Acute pain related to muscle spasms
Goals
  • The client will remain free from injury.
  • The client will have increased calcium levels above 9.0 mg/dl ( 2.25 mmol/L) ( may have different parameters for each clinical agency).
Interventions
  • Assess electrolytes and neurological status frequently.
  • Institute seizure precautions.
  • Institute fall precautions and injury prevention strategies.
  • Administer drugs, including calcium and vitamin D, as ordered.
  • Teach the client about foods high in calcium and vitamin D.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
