About
Debilitating disease affecting motor ability causing tremors, rigidity, stooped, uneven posture and slow movement.
Assess
Slow movement, stooped posture, shuffling gait, mask-like expression, pill-rolling of hands, slurred speech, flat affect, tremors, fatigue
Complications
Injury; impaired mobility; social Isolation; cognitive impairment; speech and swallowing difficulties; disease progression
Diagnosis
- Impaired mobility related to gait disturbances and imbalance
- Ineffective health maintenance related to deficient knowledge of disease process and medication management
- Ineffective coping related to chronic disease
Goals
- The client will remain free from injury.
- The client will have improved mobility.
Interventions
- Monitor neurological and neuromuscular status frequently.
- Administer medications ( dopamine agonists, COMT's, etc.) as ordered.
- Monitor for difficulty with swallowing.
- Monitor coping strategies of client and family. Encourage effective coping strategies.
- Demonstrate active and passive range of motion and encourage client to follow exercise program as ordered.
- Assist with identifying alternative methods of communication if client is unable to speak clearly.
- Teach the client and family about the drug therapy, rationale, side effects, and adverse reactions.
- Teach client and family about the disease process and expected goals of therapy.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
