About
Hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia caused by the overproduction of the maintenance parathyroid hormones ( PTH). Causes excessive reabsorption of calcium and excessive excretion of phosphates by the kidneys.
Assess
Increased calcium, s/s of hypercalcemia; decreased phosphates; spontaneous fractures, arthritis, kidney stones, pain, weight loss, nausea, monitor serum levels.
Complications
Parathyroidectomy; hypercalcemia; seizures; coma; tetany; fractures
Diagnosis
- Impaired swallowing related to enlarged, inflamed thyroid gland
- Risk for injury related to bone density loss and risk for fractures
Goals
- The client will have calcium and phosphate levels within normal ranges.
- The client will remain free from injury.
Interventions
- Monitor calcium levels, intake/ output, ECG's.
- Administer medications ( calcium chelators, phosphates, diuretics, IV fluids, etc.) as ordered.
- Institute injury prevention techniques.
- Teach client about medication therapies, disease process, and treatments.
- Prepare for surgery ( parathyroidectomy) as indicated.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
