About
Systemic inflammation and autoimmune disorder affecting body tissues and joints, causing major disability and chronic pain.
Assess
Early morning stiffness and pain, decreased ability to be mobile without significant pain, fatigue; Redness, inflammation of joints, especially in the hands and feet; usually bilateral and symmetric.
Complications
Depression, ineffective coping- refer to support services in area, encourage client to notify health care physician if changes or difficulty managing symptoms.
Immobility; chronic pain
Diagnosis
- Chronic pain related to inflammation and stiffness of joints
- Impaired physical mobility related to inflammation and stiffness of joints
- Risk for injury related to impaired physical mobility
Goals
- The client will be able to state rationales and potential side effects of medication therapy.
- The client will identify assistive devices that may help with impaired mobility.
- The client will identify activities to help maintain mobility.
Interventions
- Monitor the client for signs of pain and fatigue.
- Allow for multiple opportunities to talk about illness, side effects, concerns, fears, needs, and anything else the client may want to verbalize.
- Alternate periods of rest with activity.
- Reposition the client every two hours as necessary.
- Assist with active range of motion exercises or passive range of motion exercises.
- Administer medications as ordered; including analgesics, antiinflammatories, DMARDS, etc.
- Teach client about medications, side effects, and rationale.
- Encourage active participation with ADL's.
- Consult with PT/ OT to assist with rehabilitation needs and use of assistive devices.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
