About
Constant throbbing pain in the head on one side typically causing nausea, intense pain, sensitivity to light, and interferes with activities of daily living.
Assess
One-sided pain behind eye or ear, throbbing, frontal or temporal lobe, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, loss of appetite, presence of aura, sensitivity to noise
Complications
Medication related adverse reactions; interference with ADL's.
Diagnosis
- Acute pain related to increased pressure secondary to migraine headache
- Knowledge deficit related to symptom management
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in pain.
- The client will be able to identify contributing factors and treatment strategies to manage a future occurrence.
Interventions
- Administer medications as ordered.
- Monitor for side effects from medication therapy.
- Teach client techniques to utilize when symptoms begin.
- Teach client ways to prevent an acute attack ( avoiding triggers; beta blockers; dietary changes)
- Teach client side effects and adverse reactions of medication therapy.
- Encourage client to follow up with health care provider if increase in severity and frequency and decrease in medication effectiveness.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
