About
Accumulation of sebum and oil on the skin surface that plugs follicles causing eruptions of whiteheads and blackheads on the skin surface.
Assess
Inflammation, comedomes either closed with pus 9whiteheads or open with debris ( blackheads), pustules, inflammatory cysts, scarring of the skin, oiliness of skin surface.
Complications
Cysts, infection, scarring, abscesses
Diagnosis
- Body image disturbance related to alteration in facial appearance.
- Risk for infection related to altered skin integrity.
- Knowledge deficit related to exacerbating factors, alleviating factors, and treatment.
Goals
- The client will have a decrease in appearance of facial inflammation and eruptions.
- The client will be able to discuss feelings related to changes in outward appearance.
- The client will be able to identify treatment strategies and exacerbating factors.
- The client will remain free from infection.
Interventions
- Assess size, location, pattern, texture of lesions and outbreaks.
- Administer medications as indicated by physician ( topical antibiotics, oral tetracyclines, salicylic acid, benzyl peroxide) as indicated by health care provider.
- Teach client medication regimen and how to apply topical agents.
- Teach client to wash face twice daily with antibacterial soap and water, avoid oily and greasy foods, avoid mega doses of Vitamin A, avoid touching lesions or face.
- Encourage client to discuss feelings related to altered facial appearance.
