274-Lupus erythematosus

About
Autoimmune, inflammatory disorder causing system and organ failure characterized with periods of remissions and exacerbations.
Assess
Skin changes, especially in response to sunlight; joint pain, muscle pain, weakness, fever, fatigue, weight loss, dyspnea, assess lung sounds, sensitivity to cold. Monitor urine output, abdomen for pain; chest pain; Vital signs. CBC may show decreased values.
Complications
Kidney disease ( lupus nephritis)
Pericarditis
Pneumonia
Diagnosis
  • Acute pain related to inflammatory changes
  • Knowledge deficit related to disease course, progression, and treatment
  • Risk for injury related to skin photosensitivity
Goals
  • The client will state a decrease in pain.
  • The client will be able to identify three symptoms indicating an exacerbation of the disease state.
  • The client will identify methods to reduce complications associated with disease.
Interventions
  • Teach the client about the disease, progression, exacerbations, symptoms, management of symptoms, and potential complications.
  • Teach the client about medication therapy used to manage disease and symptoms of disease, including steroids and other immunosuppressive therapies..
  • Teach the client to avoid sunlight and to always wear a high SPF when in the sun for any length of time.
  • Encourage the client to express fears, anxieties, concerns regarding disease process.
  • Teach the client to notify physician immediately if symptoms return, worsen, or change to represent a disease exacerbation.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
