About
Otherwise known as "head lice", infestation of louse and their subsequent eggs, called nits, can occur on the scalp, in the skin, or in the perineal area and causes intense itching.
Assess
Itching, visible white flecks on head
Complications
Re-infestation; secondary infections; transmission to close contacts
Diagnosis
Impaired comfort related to itching associated with infestation
Goals
The client will be free from infestation.
Interventions
- Monitor for s/s of skin infection ( odor, crusting).
- Treat with prescribed chemical agents.
- Remove louse with fine-toothed special comb.
- Teach client that all linens, pillows, clothing, and chair backs will also need to be cleaned in hot water.
- Teach client that all close contacts should also be examined for possible infestation.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
