188-Pituitary Hypofunction

About
Decreased production of one or more of the hormones released from the pituitary resulting in growth retardation and potential sexual dysfunction.
Assess
Facial or body hair loss in men, change in sexual organs- men; loss of menstruation, painful intercourse, infertility, changes in physical appearance, visual changes
Complications
Infertility; growth retardation; osteoporosis
Altered self-concept
Diagnosis
  • Ineffective breathing pattern related to pain
  • Chronic sorrow related to inability to conceive a child
  • Sexual dysfunction related to disease process
  • Altered self concept related to physical changes
Goals
  • The client will identify treatment strategies and demonstrate self administration of medications.
  • The client will state an increase in self-esteem.
Interventions
  • Administer medications, as ordered.
  • Monitor for reactions to medications.
  • Teach client how to administer own injections, transdermal patches, or medications.
  • Teach client expected reactions and possible side effects of medications.
  • Encourage client to discuss disease process, changes experienced related to disease and/or medical therapy.
  • Encourage client to discuss feelings regarding infertility.
  • For women, monitor for blood clots and hypertension.
  • For men, monitor for BPH, gynecomastia.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
