About
Hypocalcemia caused by the lack of maintenance parathyroid hormones ( PTH) released; can be idiopathic or caused by hypomagnesemia.
Assess
Low calcium, irritability, muscle cramps, spasms, seizures, contractions of the hand, tetany, low magnesium.
Complications
Hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia
Diagnosis
- Knowledge deficit related to disease process and management
- Risk for injury related to muscle cramps, spasms, and seizures
- Risk for electrolyte imbalance
Goals
- The client will have stable calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium levels.
- The client will demonstrate understanding of medication therapy and treatment.
- The client will remain free from injury and complications.
Interventions
- Monitor for s/s associated with hypocalcemia.
- Administer medications ( calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, etc.) as indicated.
- Teach dietary considerations regarding adequate calcium consumption, but decreased phosphate consumption ( no milk, yogurt, processed cheese).
- Teach client about medication therapies, disease process, and treatments.
- Encourage client to wear a medical alert bracelet.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
