169-Reynaud's Phenomenon

About
Vasospasms of the arteries effecting the upper extremities unilaterally ( or bilaterally with Reynaud's disease) causing decreased blood supply and cyanosis to distal tissues, most often the fingers and hands.
Assess
Numbness, cold hands, sensitivity to cold, blanching hands, bilateral involvement, pain, may lead to ulcers on hands
Complications
  • Pain, injury, gangrene, finger amputation
Diagnosis
  • Pain related to decreased circulation to hands
  • Knowledge deficit related to therapeutic symptom management
Goals
  • The client will remain free from injury.
  • The client will identify modifications to prevent reoccurrence of symptoms.
Interventions
  • Monitor pain, pallor, pulses, numbness of affected hands.
  • Administer medications ( vasodilators, etc.) as indicated.
  • Teach client techniques to minimize reoccurrence including decreasing stress, avoiding cold temperatures, covering hands when exposed to cold temperatures, etc.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
