About
Absence of heart rhythm ( flat-line) via ECG or telemetry; absence of a palpable pulse.
Assess
Check lead placement. Airway, breathing, circulation, level of consciousness, oxygenation
Complications
Cerebral anoxia; death
Cardiac arrest; respiratory arrest; death
Diagnosis
- Decreased cardiac output related to abnormal heart rate or rhythm
- Ineffective tissue perfusion related to altered blood flow through the heart
Goals
The client will have a return of normal cardiac rhythm.
Interventions
- Check leads, client for presence of pulses.
- Call a code ( call for help) before beginning CPR.
- Begin chest compressions and ambu bag respirations immediately.
- Administer drugs ( atropine, epinephrine, etc.) as ordered.
- Contact family members, next of kin.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
