135-Arteriosclerosis

About
Hardening of the arteries causing decreased or ineffective relaxation and contraction.
Assess
Hypertension, carotid arteries separately, capillary refill greater than 3 seconds, cool extremities, decreased distal pulses, bruits
Complications
Myocardial infarction, hypertension, stroke, impaired circulation
Diagnosis
  • Impaired tissue perfusion related to arterial narrowing
  • Risk for ineffective therapeutic regimen management related to possible noncompliance with treatment
  • Knowledge deficit related to disease risks, dietary management, and lifestyle changes
Goals
  • The client will remain free from injury.
  • The client will identify components of disease treatment plan and modifiable risk factors.
Interventions
  • Monitor vital signs, triglycerides, cholesterol levels.
  • Administer medications ( statins, antihypertensives, antiplatelets, etc.) as ordered.
  • Teach client non-pharmacological treatments including low sodium, low fat, low cholesterol diet, exercise, weight reduction, smoking cessation, avoiding alcohol.
  • Teach client about medications including rationale, side effects, dosing schedule.
  • Teach client how to monitor blood pressure and when to seek follow-up treatment.
  • Teach client about disease and its effects on other body areas and s/s of complications.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
