About
Inflammation of the peritoneal cavity, can be related to several abdominal disorders. Should be treated promptly as it can be life threatening.
Assess
- Abdomen- may be rigid and have local or systemic referred pain to the chest and shoulder, rebound tenderness, distended, decreased bowel sounds, tachycardia, fever. Late s/s can include septicemia, compromised respiratory system and dehydration.
Complications
- Septicemia
- Respiratory arrest
- Cardiac arrest
- Acid/Base disturbances
- Hypokalemia, electrolyte imbalance
Diagnosis
- Infection ( risk for) related to change in primary body defenses
- Fluid volume deficit r/t active fluid volume loss
- Risk for impaired gas exchange
Goals
Client will maintain normal pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and urine output of at least 30 cc's urine an hour.
Interventions
- Assess abdomen and bowel sounds.
- Monitor vital signs every four hours, increase as necessary.
- Replace fluids via IV as ordered.
- Monitor urine output every hour.
- Maintain client NPO, may need NG Tube or surgery.
- Administer antipyretics prn as ordered for fever.
- Administer broad spectrum antibiotics as ordered.
