About
Adenocarcinoma, usually, in the colon and/ or rectum.
Assess
Abdominal discomfort, change in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, black tarry stools, blood in stools, anorexia, anemia, rectal pain.
Complications
Bowel obstruction, perforation, peritonitis, sepsis, metastasis, death
Diagnosis
- Anticipatory grieving related to diagnosis and treatment.
- Knowledge deficit related to diagnosis and treatment.
- Fluid volume deficit related to intestinal losses.
- Nutrition less than body requirements related to impaired oral intake.
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in abdominal pain and discomfort.
- The client will be able to identify treatment options and possible complications.
- The client will maintain adequate fluid balance.
- The client will be able to discuss feelings related to diagnosis and treatment.
- The client will be able to maintain nutrition.
- The client will be free from complications of surgery.
Interventions
- Assess bowel patterns, intake and output, electrolytes, pain levels, vital signs.
- Monitor fluid and electrolytes.
- Prepare client for surgery, as indicated.
- Encourage client to discuss feelings related to diagnosis and treatment.
- Teach client expectations of procedures and treatments.
- Teach client ways to decrease risks of complications ( Coughing and deep breathing, adequate fluid intake, adequate caloric intake, ambulation, signs and symptoms that require follow-up)
- See colon resection and colostomy if procedures are performed for the client with colorectal cancer.
