161-Mitral Valve Prolapse

About
Enlargement of one or both mitral valve leaflets causes the leaflet( s) to invade the atrium during systole. This may result in blood regurgitation from the left ventricle back into the left atrium.
Assess
Mitral click; rarely: murmurs, fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, palpitations, and anxiety.
Complications
Infection, arrhythmias, murmurs, heart failure
Diagnosis
  • Risk for injury
  • Risk for infection
  • Knowledge deficit related to diagnosis
Goals
  • The client will remain free from infection.
  • The client will identify signs and symptoms that require follow-up by health care physician.
  • The client will identify strategies to reduce the risk of infection.
Interventions
  • Assess cardiac status including abnormal heart sounds, vitals, pulse-oximetry.
  • Monitor patient for complications, including signs and symptoms of infection.
  • Teach client to avoid caffeine and alcohol which can exacerbate symptoms.
  • Teach client risk factors of infection to bloodstream including poor dental hygiene, break in oral mucosa integrity by sharp objects, body piercings, tattoos,
