152-Endocarditis

About
Infection of the endocardium caused by systemic infection, chronic IV drug use, valvular defects or valve infection.
Assess
Fever, murmurs, edema, shortness of breath, crackles in lungs, petechiae, splinter hemorrhages
Complications
Heart failure; myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolism; death
Diagnosis
  • Decreased cardiac output related to infection and inflammation
  • Excess fluid volume related to heart failure
Goals
  • The client will remain free from injury.
  • The client will remain free form infection.
  • The client will have acceptable fluid balance.
Interventions
  • Prepare for surgery as indicated.
  • Monitor vital signs, fluid balance, daily weights, intakes/ outputs, telemetry, pulse oximetry, breath sounds.
  • Administer antibiotics as indicated.
  • Encourage adequate rest during the acute illness phase.
  • Balance rest with activity,
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
