About
Defined as being two times the ideal body weight or 100 pounds over the ideal body weight. Places clients at risk for several comorbidities including diabetes, cardiac disease, stroke, and other problems.
Assess
Weight two times the ideal body weight or 100 pounds over the ideal body weight, or a body mass index exceeding 30kg/m2.
Complications
Cardiac disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension, stroke, sleep apnea
Diagnosis
- Nutrition more than body requirements related to intake, metabolic disorders.
- Knowledge deficit related to nutrition requirements, disease management, and prevention of complications
Goals
- The client will be able to identify ways to facilitate weight loss while maintaining adequate nutrition.
- The client will be able to state consequences of being overweight on long term health.
Interventions
- Assess daily weights, vitals, skin condition, dietary history.
- Monitor caloric intake, food diary, daily weight, fluid volume status.
- Teach client principles of a well balanced diet facilitating weight loss.
- Encourage client to express concerns over weight gain, loss, relationship with food, etc.
- Teach client about the risk factors associated with being overweight including and elevated risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, stroke, etc.
- Prepare client for bariatric surgery, as indicated.
- Teach client about pharmacologic intervention to aid in weight loss.
