About
Inflammation of the stomach and intestines resulting in increased loose, watery stools and vomiting. High alert in young children and older adults.
Assess
Origin can be viral or bacterial. Assess for recent travel, possible food contaminants, or oral-fecal transmission.
Assessment will include diarrhea frequency, vomiting, cramping, pain, fatigue, anorexia and weakness.
Complications
- Hypokalemia-replace potassium via IV slowly on an infusion pump.
- Dehydration- administer fluids via IV, monitor neurological status in children and older adults, monitor electrolytes.
Diagnosis
- Fluid volume deficit r/t gastrointestinal losses
- Pain related to abdominal spasms and increased peristalsis
Goals
Client will maintain normal vital signs.
Client will drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
Interventions
- Monitor VS and fluid volume status.
- Supportive care, administer fluids via IV as indicated, encourage oral intake of liquids.
- Obtain stools cultures as ordered.
- Teach importance of not taking medications that may suppress gastrointestinal motility so that bacteria and virus can be removed through GI losses.
- Teach client regarding hygiene to prevent transmission to close contacts.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
