About
Cancer of the stomach. Risk factors include genetics, smoking, h. pylori infection, history of peptic ulcer disease.
Assess
Heartburn, indigestion, bloating, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, pain
Complications
Malnutrition, hemorrhage, metastasis, death
Diagnosis
- Pain related to tumor.
- Imbalanced nutrition, less than body requirements related to impaired appetite
- Anxiety related to diagnosis and knowledge deficit
Goals
- The client will state a decrease in pain on a 0-10 VAS scale less than 4.
- The client will state ways to increase caloric intake in small frequent meals.
- The client will be able to discuss treatment options and care plan.
Interventions
- Assess pain levels, intake and output, calorie count, daily weight, understanding of disease process and treatment options.
- Administer pain medications as prescribed by physician.
- Encourage opportunities for client to express feelings and concerns regarding diagnosis and treatment.
- Teach client ways to increase dietary intake with several small meals and food high in protein and caloric content.
- Teach client expectations of procedures and treatments.
