About
Esophageogastroduodenoscopy- Surgical procedure using conscious sedation to visualize areas of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
Assess
Incision, bleeding, bruising, circulation; Vital signs, pulse oximetry, pain level.
VS, level of consciousness, pain, abdomen, signs/ symptoms of bleeding, and return of gag reflex.
Complications
Infection, bleeding, perforation, aspiration
Diagnosis
- Acute pain related to surgical procedure
- Risk for infection related to surgical procedure
- Deficient knowledge related to post surgical treatment regimen
Goals
- The client will understand pre-, intra-, and post-operative instructions.
- The client will remain free from post-operative complications.
Interventions
- Monitor vital signs every 15 minutes X 2, 30 minutes X2, one hour X2 ( may have different guidelines for each clinical agency).
- Monitor for blood in stool or increase in abdominal pain.
- Teach client what to expect pre-, intra-, and post-operatively.
- Make sure client has completed bowel prep prior to surgery.
- Maintain NPO prior to surgery maintain NPO after surgery until return of gag reflex.
- Prevent aspiration, maintain head of bed in semi-fowler's position until return of gag reflex.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
