About
Inflammation and swelling of the tonsils, usually with a bacterial origin.
Assess
Throat, tonsils ( red, swollen, pus), make sure you have a patent airway, moderate to severe sudden pain, fever, muscle aches or myalgia
History of previous virus or infection.
Complications
Peritonsillar abscess ( assess airway patency), Tonsillectomy may be needed of frequent reoccurring infections continue.
Diagnosis
- Pain related to inflammation of tissue
- Fatigue related to infectious process
Goals
- Client will state a decrease in pain.
- Client will demonstrate proper infection control techniques.
- Client will be able to state symptoms that would indicate need for evaluation of treatment plan.
Interventions
- Increase fluids, and encourage adequate rest.
- Administer medications, including antibiotics and analgesics.
- Administer antipyretics for fever.
- Encourage client to notify physician or nurse if difficulty in breathing or symptoms do not improve after 24 hours.
- Teach client about prescribed medications, including antibiotics to be completed even if symptoms improve.
- Teach client proper hand hygiene and ways to manage coughs, sneezing and disposal of tissues.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
