About
Air leaking out of the lungs into the tissues. Causes a crackling sound when the tissue is palpated. Usually corrected by correcting the air leak.
Assess
Crackles when palpating skin on chest wall or neck, pre-existing trauma causing air leak
Complications
Tracheal and laryngeal edema, airway obstruction, complications from other injuries.
Diagnosis
- Risk for injury related to edema and swelling.
- Risk for infection.
Goals
The client will remain free from injury.
The client will maintain a patent airway.
Interventions
- Assess lung sounds, edema extent and severity, airway, pulse-oximetry, vitals signs frequently.
- Monitor for stridor, wheezing, dyspnea or other indicators of tracheal edema or obstruction.
- Prepare for tracheostomy if airway edema worsens or progresses.
- Monitor for decreasing swelling and crackles upon palpation indicating resolution of condition.
- Teach client signs and symptoms that may indicate worsening of condition or potential complication.
