About
Inflammation of the visceral and parietal layers of the pleurae usually resulting in sharp pain.
Assess
Pleural friction rub upon auscultation, knife-like pain with inspiration, underlying infection or problem such as pneumonia.
Complications
Pleural effusion, pneumonia.
Diagnosis
- Ineffective breathing pattern related to inflammation and pain with breathing.
- Pain related to increased inflammation.
Goals
- The client will have a decrease in pain with inspiration.
- The client will have clear breath sounds upon auscultation.
- The client will be free from infection.
Interventions
- Assess vital signs, pulse oximetry, lung sounds, and pain levels frequently.
- Monitor for potential pleural effusion as condition worsens and report immediately to health care provider.
- Administer pain medicine as ordered by a physician.
- Administer other medications to treat underlying condition ( antibiotics, diuretics) as indicated by a physician.
- Teach client signs and symptoms of worsening, potential complications, and when to seek immediate follow-up from physician.
