43-pleurisy

About
Inflammation of the visceral and parietal layers of the pleurae usually resulting in sharp pain.
Assess
Pleural friction rub upon auscultation, knife-like pain with inspiration, underlying infection or problem such as pneumonia.
Complications
Pleural effusion, pneumonia.
Diagnosis
  • Ineffective breathing pattern related to inflammation and pain with breathing.
  • Pain related to increased inflammation.

Goals
  • The client will have a decrease in pain with inspiration.
  • The client will have clear breath sounds upon auscultation.
  • The client will be free from infection.

Interventions
  • Assess vital signs, pulse oximetry, lung sounds, and pain levels frequently.
  • Monitor for potential pleural effusion as condition worsens and report immediately to health care provider.
  • Administer pain medicine as ordered by a physician.
  • Administer other medications to treat underlying condition ( antibiotics, diuretics) as indicated by a physician.
  • Teach client signs and symptoms of worsening, potential complications, and when to seek immediate follow-up from physician.
