56-sinusitis

About
Inflammation and possible infection of the sinuses.
Assess
Pressure in the cheeks bone area and the forehead region, recent infection or virus, headache, pain upon palpation of the face and forehead, temperature.
Complications
Surgical intervention
Additional infections, including meningitis, encephalitis, ear infections- maintain antibiotic therapy until completely gone; follow-up if symptoms do not improve or worsen.
Diagnosis
Acute pain related to sinus congestion and inflammation and viral or bacterial infection
Goals
  • The client will identify ways to manage symptoms related to sinusitis.
  • The client will be able to state rationale and side effects from medication therapies.

Interventions
  • Encourage rest during acute illness.
  • Encourage client to increase fluid hydration, at least 10 glasses of water or juice.
  • Encourage client to wash hands frequently during acute sinusitis to minimize the risk of transmission of infection.
  • Administer decongestants, antiinflammatories, analgesics as ordered.
  • Administer antibiotics as ordered.
  • Administer hot, wet compresses to facial area as ordered.
  • Encourage client to take antibiotics until completely gone, even if symptoms improve.
  • Teach client about possible contraindications to certain over the counter remedies ( i.e. pseudoephedrine, cold medicine).
  • Teach client about medications.
  • Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
