Assess
Extent of other symptoms ( including cough, nasal drainage, characteristics of sputum and/ or nasal drainage) temperature, throat redness and drainage ( exudate), tonsils, fatigue
Pain or difficulty with swallowing, rapid culture test for strep.
Complications
Strep throat, bacterial infection. If not properly treated with antibiotics, complications can include acute Glomerulernephritis, rheumatic fever, epiglottitis, pneumonia, and secondary infections.
Diagnosis
- Pain related to inflammation of pharyngeal tissue
- Risk for infection
- Pain related to erythema, irritation, and inflammation of oral pharynx
- Impaired swallowing related to inflammation of the oral pharynx
Goals
- Client will state a decrease in pain in 24 hours.
- Client will be able to identify three measures to improve health.
- Client will demonstrate good hand hygiene and ways to minimize the spread of microorganisms.
Interventions
- Monitor the client for changes in assessment findings.
- Teach client supportive measures to help with symptoms and prevent complications including increased fluids, humidity, throat gargles, rest, administration of analgesics and throat lozenges.
- Teach infection control techniques including hand hygiene, coughing and sneezing into tissue, proper disposal of tissue, avoiding crowds while sick.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
