About
Inflammation of the larynx, typically causing a dry raspy tone of voice or no vocal capability.
Assess
Airway, assess oral pharynx, history of exposure to irritants, previous illness, over-use of voice, assess voice tone and quality or lack there-of, history of infection or GERD.
Complications
Infection- bronchitis, sinusitis
Aphonia- inability to talk
Diagnosis
- Impaired communication related to inability to verbally communicate
- Risk for infection related to inflammation
Goals
- The client will state three ways to alleviate symptoms.
- The client will have a return of normal voice.
Interventions
- Assess clients ability to swallow and observe oropharynx for obstruction or eythema.
- Encourage client to maintain a period of voice rest.
- Educate client about irritants that can contribute to reoccurrence, including alcohol ingestion and smoking.
- Encourage client to maintain hydration and drink extra fluids.
- Teach signs and symptoms client should report that may indicate infection or complications.
- Administer steam inhalations and throat lozenges.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
