About
An infection of the epiglottis, usually as a result of ineffective treatment of throat infections. Can be life-threatening!
Assess
Airway, monitor for signs and symptoms of airway obstruction, including stridor ( audible harsh wheezing), lack of respirations. Monitor for s/s of aspiration when swallowing.
Previous infection or illness, visualize oral pharynx, assess for airway obstruction.
Complications
Airway obstruction, death if an immediate airway is not established.
Diagnosis
- Impaired gas exchange related to airway partial or complete obstruction
- Pain related to inflammation of epiglottis
- Impaired swallowing related to inflammation of the oral pharynx
Goals
- The client will maintain a patent airway.
- The client ( with throat infections) will be able to list signs and symptoms needing urgent medical treatment.
Interventions
- Monitor respirations, pulse oximetry, breathing pattern for changes necessitating an immediate artificial airway.
- Encourage clients to take all antibiotics until completely gone with infections of the throat.
- Administer antibiotics as ordered and scheduled by physician
- Teach client signs and symptoms of complications of sore throat, pharyngitis, tonsillitis.
- Notify physician and prepare for immediate intubation or tracheotomy if airway obstruction occurs.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
