About
A complication of upper respiratory infections involving the A beta hemolytic streptococcus that may cause fever and further sequela throughout the body. See also Rheumatic Carditis.
Assess
Presence of an upper respiratory infection recently. Assess throat and upper airway for signs and symptoms of infection. Ask client about medical management of any upper respiratory ailments. Assess heart, auscultate for any arrhythmias or abnormal heart sounds including murmurs. Monitor VS.
Assess heart for dysrhythmias, murmurs, previous history of heart disease or valve problems. Assess for s/s of congestive heart failure.
Complications
Rheumatic Endocarditis ( infection of the heart muscle and the surrounding tissues), valvular disease including mitral valve stenosis
Diagnosis
- Ineffective therapeutic regimen management related to perceived benefits of maintaining antibiotic therapy
- Knowledge deficit related to self care with infection or illness
- Risk for infection related to spread of microorganisms in body
Goals
- Client will be able to discuss medication regimen.
- Client will be able to list three ways that maintaining medication therapy can improve health.
Interventions
- Monitor Intake and output, vital signs, cardiac and respiratory assessments.
- Encourage adequate fluid intake.
- Administer antipyretics, analgesics, and antibiotics as ordered.
- Identify barriers to previous antibiotic treatments and meeting goals of the treatment.
- Discuss risks of not discontinuing antibiotic treatment until all of the medication is consumed. Discuss ways to help maintain an easy schedule to maintain antibiotic regimen.
- Teach client about disease process, and possible complications of disease process.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
