Runny nose.
Assess
Ask client about recent exposure to irritants, history of allergies and seasonal allergies ( hay fever), color of discharge, use of medications ( overuse of nasal sprays can cause rhinitis and congestion), history of illicit drug use or "snorting" of substances; history of previous illness, concurrent symptoms.
Complications
Rebound nasal congestion- results from overuse of nasal sprays.
Sinus infection; Otitis media; upper respiratory infections
Diagnosis
- Impaired comfort related to viral illness
- Knowledge deficit related to care of viral condition and prevention of further infections
Goals
- The client will have a decrease in nasal secretions and congestion.
- The client will identify ways to manage runny nose for future occurrences.
Interventions
- Administer nasal decongestants, nasal sprays as ordered.
- Administer medications to manage allergic symptoms as ordered.
- Encourage client to maintain adequate fluid hydration.
- Encourage client to wash hands frequently during acute episodes of increased nasal secretions.
- Encourage patient to identify triggers to increased nasal secretions.
- Teach client about medications.
- Teach client about possible contraindications to certain over the counter remedies ( i.e. pseudoephedrine, cold medicine).
- Teach proper waste disposal of tissues.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
