Cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue, stuffy nasal congestion.
Assess
Symptoms, cough, rhinitis, congestion, auscultate lungs to be sure not lower respiratory tract illness, color of sputum, use of over the counter medications, sinus pressure, duration of symptoms.
Complications
Upper respiratory infection- monitor for fever, facial pressure, ear pain.
Diagnosis
- Impaired comfort related to viral infection
Goals
- The client will identify three ways to avoid pathogen transmission to close contacts.
- The client will be able to state three ways to relieve symptoms associated with virus.
Interventions
- Encourage adequate hydration during the acute illness state.
- Encourage adequate rest during acute illness state.
- Teach proper hygiene and tissue disposal to prevent the spread of the virus.
- Teach client signs and symptoms to report to health care providers that might indicate the onset of an infection.
- Discuss with client current medication regimen, including over-the-counter medications, that may assist with certain viral symptoms.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
