About
Lung collapse due to collection of pus in the pleural space.
Assess
Lung sounds, absent lung sounds, chest x-ray results, placement of chest tube, dyspnea, pain location, recent infection or illness, cough, sputum color.
Complications
Open thoracotomy- if empyema does not evacuate with closed chest tube drainage.
Diagnosis
- Risk for infection related to infectious process in the pleural space
- Ineffective breathing pattern related to decreased lung capacity
Goals
- The client will have a re-expansion of lung tissue.
- The client will maintain adequate oxygenation.
Interventions
- Assess lung sounds.
- Monitor vital signs and pulse oximetry.
- Administer oxygen, as ordered.
- Monitor closed chest tube drainage system, be sure suction is set appropriately and the chambers are full with necessary water.
- Administer antibiotics and analgesics or opiates, as ordered.
- Monitor for respiratory distress.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
