About
Any fracture or displacement of nasal bones and/or cartilage.
Assess
Nasal deformities, swelling and bruising of nose and surrounding facial area resulting from injury. Assess for drainage and note characteristics of drainage.
Be sure the injury is limited to the nose.
Complications
Deviated septum, breathing difficulties, disfigurement. Monitor for s/s of other injuries to the head and neck, including cerebrospinal fluid drainage from nose ( clear drainage).
Diagnosis
- Impaired airway clearance related to nasal tissue swelling
- Pain related to inflammatory tissue changes
- Pain related to tissue trauma and injury
- Body image disturbance related to injury to facial features
Goals
- Client will maintain a patent airway.
- Client will describe a decrease in pain.
Interventions
- Assess nasal bridge, septum, drainage.
- Monitor VS, administer fluids, maintain adequate humidity to prevent excessive dryness to damaged mucosa.
- Obtain x-ray films as ordered.
- Prepare client for surgical reduction within 24 hours.
- Post-operatively, administer analgesics, no aspirin or NSAIDS to minimize bleeding.
- Maintain semi-fowlers position, administer cool compresses to facial area to minimize swelling.
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
