About
Genetically linked disorder that causes fluid filled cysts to develop in the nephrons, gradually displacing normally functioning nephrons and pushing on other organs in the peritoneal cavity.
Assess
Genetic history; abdominal pain, constipation, high blood pressure, change in urinary patterns, distended abdomen,
Complications
Hypertension- encourage low sodium diet and medication regime; kidney failure- educate the client about disease and management to prevent or slow disease progression.
Diagnosis
- Risk for infection related to decreased renal function
- Acute pain related to swollen cystic kidneys
- Ineffective health maintenance related to dietary restrictions, medication management
Goals
- Client will state a decrease in pain.
- Client will state three methods to reduce episodes of constipation.
- Client will describe methods to decrease risk of infection.
Interventions
- Monitor blood pressure, pain levels, temperature, urine output.
- Administer antihypertensives as ordered.
- Encourage client to maintain adequate fluid intake, eat foods rich in fiber, and monitor bowel elimination patterns to prevent constipation.
- Administer stool softeners, dietary fiber, and/ or laxatives to maintain bowel regularity as ordered.
- Administer pain medications prn as ordered.
- Encourage client to notify the nurse when pain levels increase on a 1 to 10 scale.
- Teach client methods to prevent constipation.
- Teach client signs and symptoms to report to health care providers that might indicate the onset of an infection.
- Teach client methods to monitor blood pressure and ways to keep blood pressure within acceptable ranges ( low sodium diet, use of antihypertensives, etc).
- Monitor for signs/ symptoms of complications.
